The Certified Hand Therapist specialty

X-Ray

What makes the CHT credential important?

The Hand Therapist Certification Committee awards the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) credential twice per year to occupational therapists and physical therapists with at least 3 years of licensure and 4,000 hours of direct upper extremity practice. Each CHT has successfully passed a rigorous comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper quarter rehabilitation. Because of changes in the profession, every CHT is required to demonstrate continued professional development and competency by re-certifying every five years.

Becoming a Certified Hand Therapist requires 4 years of Bachelor degree studies, 2.5-3 years of Master/Doctorate degree and 3 additional years of practice as a licensed occupational or physical therapist. That totals 10 years to become a Certified Hand Therapist!

They are broken down by profession as follows:

Occupational Therapists                    86%

Physical Therapists                              13%

CHTs who are both OT & PT                 1%
